  • If blue and white are your thing, (as it is mine) then this is a necklace for you.

  • It consists of handmade discs of royal blue and incised white pottery beads at 3 cm in diameter and 17 mm deep. These colours have been clearly done in enamels, with a lovely polish to them. And because they are handmade, each is slightly different in its pattern.

  • The pottery discs have been interspersed with discs of Peking glass in a French blue colour. Again, they are handmade, so they vary in size but are approximately19 mm x 7 mm deep.

  • In contrast to all of the blues, there are four large antique, silver beads made in Afghanistan, using their ancient technique of taking silver and rolling it over hardened resin or wax. The silver has a lovely warmth about it, but they are also not perfect, as there are slight dents on the beads. But this indicates their wear and tear age and gives character to the silver. They are 26 mm x 18 mm. in size.

  • Fourteen sterling silver spacer beads (3 mm) have also been used.

  • I have then knotted the royal blue, silk/polyester cord with the traditional Chinese “flat knot” as well as the “button knot”. This is not only a classical Chinese technique, but it lightens the necklace and makes it quite comfortable to wear. It also sets off the design.

  • A silver toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp. The clasp has also been made by the Karen hill tribes, of twisted silver wires to create a rope design.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 44 cm.
