  • This is an antique nephrite jade Bi disc with mottled markings of brown, grey and an almost earthy red. It is a large disc, but not terribly heavy because the carver has carved the jade disc into a narrow ring. It is 7 cm in diameter and 6. 5 mm thick.

  • The Bi disc for the Chinese, is an important emblem of harmony and long life. In ancient tmes, the Bi disc was often placed in the tomb to give such attributes to the deceased. Later, those same aspects could be passed onto the owner of the Bi disc, whether worn as a pendant or simply collected.

  • Within the disc, I have hung an antique Victorian decorative brass ornament, possibly from a piece of furniture. It is full of Victorian detail and charm, a cool contrast to the simplicity of the jade Bi disc. It is 3.5 cm in diameter.

  • Above the disc sits a handmade, vintage 18K gold on silver on hardened resin bead from Afghanistan (13 mm). The artisan has used the traditional techniques, handed down through the craftsmen of Alexander the Great, in 330 BC. This ancient craft takes sheet metal and moulds it over hardened resin and then works the metal quite laboriously.

  • And lastly, there is an antique golden nephrite jade bead (17 mm x 10 mm) in the shape of bamboo. Bamboo is the emblem for long life and endurance.

  • All the elements hang on a handmade taupe silk/polyester chain, which, on one of the rings hangs my silver name label.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 46 cm.
