  • I know this is long, but it makes a stunning necklace and looks wonderful on a jersey or with a long boyfriend cardigan.

  • The theme is grey. It begins with a vintage, nephrite jade, rectangular panel. This has been carved in a scale-like pattern reminiscent of a dragon, which always brings us back to the Chinese dragon, a figure of inspiration. The basic colour of the jade, from what I can tell, is a terracotta brown which has been calcified, hence the chalky white colouring, like frost on a brick wall. The piece is 5.5 cm high, 4 cm wide and 9 mm thick. It is a substantial, handsome piece. But what it would have been used for is debateable. Such shapes were sometimes used as tablets, others were used as part of a belt, along with other such plaques, creating a belt. It could also be a symbolic tablet of authority, which such pieces often were.

  • The other main piece of jade is the antique grey Bi disc, a symbol of harmony and longevity for the Chinese. In its grey tonality, it also has been partly calcified. It is 4 cm across and 3.5 mm thick.

  • Two further pieces of jadeite have been carved as open work cylinders (16.9 mm long by 10 mm wide). They are actually lavender jade, but the colour is more grey than lavender.

  • There is a horizontal bar, in the shape of a sterling silver, open work cylinder (19.5 mm x 9 mm), striking in its unique shape. It is made by the Karen hill tribes in Thailand who use silver that is 98% pure silver. Sterling silver beads (8 mm) are used as spacers in between the elements.

  • The various elements hang from a handmade grey silk/polyester band. The band’s clasp consists of a jade bead which fits into one of two stretchable silk rings, enabling the wearer to vary the length. My silver label is attached at the ring.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 46 cm with a (wait for it) a 17.5 cm pendant drop.
