  • I can envision this necklace against linen. Handsome and interesting.

  • It begins with a natural nephrite jade Bi disc in mottled colours of caramel, cream and charcoal. The disc is 5.5 cm across and 6.5 mm deep. The Bi disc in Asia, is a symbol of harmony and long life, which means, the wearer takes on those wonderful attributes.

  • Sitting above the disc is a comfortable looking rabbit with its ears thrown back in a relaxed manner. He is vintage and is made of carved bone. He is 2.5 cm long, 1.5 cm high and 6 mm deep. For the Chinese, the rabbit is an emblem of cleverness, and in particular, longevity. The ancient Chinese believed there was a rabbit living on the moon as a companion for the Moon Goddess, who never ages. Resulting from this relationship, the rabbit then takes on the gift of long life (as does the possessor of the rabbit).

  • Above the rabbit is an open work jade bead, rather like a stained glass “Rose” window in a church. It is 2.5 cm across.

  • Lastly, there is a handmade sterling silver bead (14.5 mm), created by the Karen hill tribes in Thailand in a three-dimensional design. Karen hill tribe Fair Trade silver is nearly 98% pure silver. I mostly choose to use their silver because each piece is like a miniature bit of sculpture, individually crafted and created. I know that artisans in Northern Thailand produce this unique silversmithing in small villages, involving whole families in the process.

  • Small sterling silver beads (6 mm) are used as spacers in between the elements.

  • The various elements hang from a handmade, toffee coloured, silk/polyester band. The band’s clasp consists of a jade bead which fits into one of two stretchable silk rings, enabling the wearer to vary the length. My silver label is attached at the ring.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 46 cm with a 6 cm pendant drop.
