  • This charming antique Art Nouveau pendant is German and marked clearly on the back with the stamp 585, which is the equivalent of 14K gold. It has been set with a sapphire cabochon.

  • Its fluid, organic lines are in keeping with the designs of the Art Nouveau period. It is 3 cm long by 12.8 mm wide, 2 mm deep and with the cabochon setting, 6.3 mm high.

  • The pendant (which was once a brooch) hangs on a double strand of faceted tanzanite (4 mm) graduated beads.

  • Tanzanite is the blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. It is a fairly “new” gemstone, discovered in 1967 by a gold prospector named Manuel de Souza. It is mined commercially only in one area of the world: at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which is where it gets its name. But because it is found only in a small area of Tanzania, it is a rare stone. The Tanzanian government regulates its mining and selling very strictly. This means that the industry has remained sustainable and ethical. As a result, the country’s economy and local communities benefit from its production and sale. According to Massai tribe lore, tanzanite is considered a spiritual stone; it inspires compassion and calmness. Tanzanite is the birthstone of December which means it makes a wonderful present for the winter.

  • At the centre of the necklace, above the pendant, there are two, vintage, handmade 18K gold on hardened resin beads (5.6 mm) from Afghanistan. These are (rare)beads, which used the traditional Afghan techniques. They are made by the ancient Afghan craft of taking sheet metal and moulding it over hardened resin, a technique handed down through the craftsmen of Alexander the Great. Their handiwork and the yellow gold colour gives the necklace warmth and character and complements the gems.

  • The two strands of tanzanite feed into two small vintage, handmade, Afghan, gold on brass on hardened resin beads (8.5mm).

  • The clasp is a 14K gold toggle clasp. I prefer using toggle clasps because they are easy to use and quite secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 42 cm with a 4 cm pendant drop.
