  • At the centre of this necklace sits an amazing, double-sided intaglio stone seal, which is said to be dated to the medieval period, around 800 to 1200 AD. Although I believe this seal to be centuries old, as the dealer assured me, I am not an expert. But having looked at many seals since, it certainly fits within this category. It actually is quite Hitite in style. Whatever its age, it is a wonderful and quite charming, two-side piece.

  • On one side of the seal, stands a deer type creature, intended, by the craftsman, to be in the woods, near a tree with grass above. It turns its head backwards, as if listening out cautiously for a sound. On the flip side, another horned creature, with a striped body and clearly delineated paws, stares out at us, with down turned horns. It is made of a grey stone and is 3 cm square and 7 mm deep. Such seals have always been vital to stamp all sorts of documents throughout history.

  • On either side of the seal, there are two handmade, woven sterling silver beads (14 mm), made by the Karen hill tribes of Thailand. At the end of the necklace, there are two further Karen hill tribe beads (10 mm), deeply etched and shaped.

  • Following these beads, there are two antique carnelian beads (17 mm) from Afghanistan, inlaid with brass, lapis and turquoise.

  • The remaining stone beads consist of natural carnelian (19.10 mm) and acid treated agate beads (19.9 mm). These acid treated agate beads all have a wonderful, individual texture and pattern.

  • Four, brushed sterling silver discs from India (18.5 mm) also punctuate the design.

  • A silver toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp. The clasp has been

  • made by the Karen hill tribes, of twisted silver to create a rope design.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 46 cm.
