  • Neutral colours are so easy to wear. The nephrite jade pendant is of a warm, taupe colour. And the antique nephrite jade lotus beads are of a linen shade.

  • The pendant is carved in the shape of a Chinese padlock and in the centre of the lock, there is a “double happiness” character flanked by two peonies and bats. As with all Chinese shapes and icons, this is full of symbolism. The padlock means protection and security; the peonies signify opulence, beauty, honour and high social status; and the bats are an emblem of long life. The pendant measures 5 cm wide by 4 cm high and 5 mm deep.

  • It hangs on two strands of 4 mm natural mat onyx.

  • The necklace itself is composed of cubes of mat, unpolished natural onyx cubes (12 mm) interspersed with brushed gold-on-silver rings, (14 mm), made in India.

  • The vermeil nuggets are 14K gold on silver over pebbles, made in China. These vary in size and shape as they are based on natural elements. The approximate size is 15 mm x 16 mm.

  • Six antique nephrite cream coloured jade beads are carved in the form of lotus flowers (16 mm). For the Chinese, this flower is a vital symbol of long life and honour. Because the flower rises from the mud and blooms, it is an emblem of exquisite beauty, perfection and purity.

  • I have used a vermeil toggle clasp. Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 46 cm with a 4 cm pendant drop.
