  • Every time I look at this saucy cat, I can’t resist a smile. I know very little about him, other than that he is sterling silver with a bit of age to him. He is almost a cartoon cat, with his curling tail, his button cross nose, his whiskers and his etched fur stripes. He’s a real moggy; he’s confident and he rules…and he knows it. He’s 4.5 cm across and with his tail, he stands at 4 cm.

  • I have set him on his way, with his head and tail above the beads, and he, appropriately, is in the centre of the necklace. There are two strands. The top strand is of natural, Chinese turquoise beads, (8 mm). The bottom strand is of irregular slices of natural Chinese turquoise, each slice, a different shape and size from the next, with some at 7 mm x 19mm and others at 11 mm x 10.10 mm. Interspersed among the turquoise slices are round discs (12 mm) and squares (13 mm) of sterling silver, made by the Karen hill tribes of Thailand.

  • The two strands feed into two vintage, handmade, fair trade sterling silver bead, again crafted by the Karen hill tribes. Karen hill tribe Fair Trade silver is nearly 98% pure silver. I mostly choose to use their silver because each piece is like a miniature bit of sculpture, individually crafted and created. I know that artisans in Northern Thailand produce this unique silversmithing in small villages, involving whole families in the process. Their work is fairly paid, and as a result, their beads are much more expensive but a family is supported and wonderful beads and jewellery are produced in high quality silver.

  • A handmade, sterling silver toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • Length 43 cm.
