Sterling Silver Elephant and Beads on Vermeil and Natural Tibetan Naga Shell

  • The sterling silver elephant pendant is the workmanship of the Karen hill tribes in Thailand.

  • Karen hill tribe Fair Trade silver is nearly 98% pure silver. I mostly choose to use their silver because each piece is like a miniature bit of sculpture, individually crafted and created. I know that artisans in Northern Thailand produce this unique silversmithing in small villages, involving whole families in the process. Their work is fairly paid, and as a result, their beads are much more expensive. But a family is supported and wonderful beads and jewellery are produced in high quality silver.

  • You cannot fail to see the wonderful detail of this lively elephant, which measures 1 ½ inches across (4 cm), ¾ inches high (2 cm) and 15 mm deep.

  • It hangs on the necklace using gold and silver tonality. I have used vermeil discs, including a 14 mm disc, as well as handmade, sterling silver plain beads (18 mm) and hammered sterling silver beads (18 mm), all created by the Karen tribes.

  • The rest of the necklace is made up of Tibetan vintage, naga shell discs (19mm) and a number of vintage, calcified, carved nephrite jade discs (16 mm).

  • The naga shell is actually a conch shell that originated in Naga Land, India. It was traded to Tibet well over 100 years ago. The naga shell represents the fame of the Buddha’s teaching which spreads in all directions, like the sound of the conch trumpet. These shell beads were usually used as prayer beads because of their Buddhist connection. But they were and are also enjoyed for personal adornment.

  • I have then knotted the silk/polyester cord with the traditional Chinese “flat knot” as well as the “button knot”. This is not only a classical Chinese technique, but it lightens the necklace and makes it quite comfortable to wear.

  • A 14ct gold vermeil toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

  • The necklaces come, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • The necklace is 17 inches long (43 cm) with a 1 inch pendant drop (2.5 cm).
