Large Antique Carnelian Bead with Sterling Silver and Natural Serpentine

  • At the centre of this necklace, there is an antique carnelian bead, 1 ¼ inch (3 cm) by 1 ½ inches (4 cm) and 20 mm deep. It is full of wear and rich patination. This is a rare piece, sometimes referred to as ancient Himyarit bead from the Himyarit Kingdom, western Asiatic, 1500 years old. I have shown the wear and natural pitting of the stone. Whether this bead is the ancient Himyarit bead or whether it is 19th century, I cannot tell, but it certainly has age.

  • It is bordered by two handmade, fair trade sterling silver beads, deeply ribbed (22 mm) crafted by the Karen hill tribes of Thailand. There are also four silver on zinc disc beads on either side.

  • Natural acid green serpentine discs (26 mm) form the contrasting colour to the carnelian. Tiny sterling silver beads are used as spacers to separate the discs.

  • And on either side, there are two wonderful carnelian beads (23 mm) inlaid with silver from Tibet.

  • Lastly, 4 sterling silver beads (13 mm) from Thailand finish the design.

  • A handmade, sterling silver toggle clasp, has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • The necklace is 17 inches long (43 cm).
