Vintage Nephrite Celadon Jade Pendant on Aventurine, Antique Jade, Rubies and Emeralds on Silver Beads

  • This necklace is a throwback to Mughal India with its colours and elements.

  • The Mughal Empire was from 1526-1761. It commanded resources unprecedented in Indian history with its wealth and glory. Its craftsmen were renown throughout the world. And those skills are still alive in India today.

  • Celadon, nephrite jade was frequently used in Mughal jewellery, dishes and even daggers. But it was always enriched by rubies and emeralds.

  • The vintage carved nephrite jade knot of a flower is carved through on both sides. At 2 inches diameter (5 cm) but only 5 mm deep, it has a presence without the weight.

  • It hangs on celadon jade beads, onto antique carved celadon jade beads (10 mm). These are enlivened by two, burgundy glass beads from India (12 mm), and two sterling silver and vermeil wave discs.

  • But the essence of India comes into the design with the two etched, silver beads, treated to look old, and set with dyed rubies and emeralds on both sides of the beads. These Indian beads from Jaipur are 1 inch long (2.5 cm) and 12 mm deep.

  • The emerald theme of Mughal India continues in the design with dyed emerald aventurine panels, 1 inch long (2.5 cm), separated by celadon jadeite beads.

  • A 14ct gold vermeil toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

  • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

  • The necklace is 17 inches long (43 cm) with a 2 inch pendant drop (5 cm).
