    • Yes, this is quite a statement piece of vintage nephrite jade.  But he is such a handsome stag, with his rather glorious antlers, which, by the look on his face, is a feature he is clearly proud of.  To the Chinese, the deer is a symbol of long life.  That is because he is the only creature who was able to unearth the sacred funghi which bestows longevity (which, by the way then is bestowed on the owner of the deer).
    • The carving of the stag is robust and expressive.  The artisan who carved the stag utilized the natural mottling of the nephrite jade to create the animal’s coat.  He is quite substantial, at 2¾ inches long, 2 inches wide and 5.7 mm thick.
    • The over-all effect of this necklace is meant to be interesting, intriguing, slightly playful, textured and colourful.
    • The stag hangs on natural Chinese turquoise beads (4 mm).
    • The necklace itself is comprised of  two, antique, handmade, lost wax brass beads from West Africa (13 mm) followed by two antique, nephrite jade beads (14 mm).
    • There are then two antique carved carnelian beads (16.5 mm) from Afghanistan, inlaid with brass, lapis and turquoise.
    • Four swirl carved magnesite turquoise beads, in slightly varied size, from 23mm to 18 mm, give the necklace a colourful contrast to the majority of tans and cream tones. The craftsman who carved these beads, created a wonderful texture and colouration.
    • Magnesite is a mineral, magnesium carbonate, that has the same crystal structure as calcite. Its natural colour is cream and when carved and polished it features a dark web of veins or web-like matrix across its surface.  This makes it an attractive gem to use.  It is often dyed to a turquoise colour, which is completely stable.
    • There are two antique carved nephrite beads (18 mm), in a natural cream and tan colouring, but if you look closely, they have been carved with the head of Buddha.
    • Two larger antique nephrite jade beads (20 mm) in a mottled cream colour are flanked by vintage Chinese brass coins (22 mm).
    • I have then knotted the silk/polyester cord with the traditional Chinese “flat knot” as well as the “button knot”.  This is not only a classical Chinese technique, but it lightens the necklace and makes it quite comfortable to wear.  It also sets off the design.
    • I have used a vermeil toggle clasp.  Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
    • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor
    • The necklace is 19 inches long (48.5 cm)

Vintage Natural Lapis with Chinese Export, Enamel Dog, Stirling Silver, Bone and Glass on Burgundy Silk Chain

    • A dramatic carving of vintage lapis, in the shape of a coiled dragon, creates a rich contrast with the burgundy colour chain. Trying to see where the dragon actually is, takes a moment of careful looking. But he is there, as though he were pretending to be invisible. This large piece of brilliant blue lapis is carved through to the other side and the carving then repeats itself. It is 2 ½ inches long (6.5 cm) by 1 ½ inches wide (4 cm) and 8 mm deep. The dragon, important in Chinese culture, symbolizes the Emperor and his power and playfulness. But it also stands for the universal source of energy, known as “Chi”.
    • Above and below the pendant are two Indian glass beads (9 mm) in a rich dark red.
    • At the bottom hangs a vintage, Chinese export, enamel Foo dog, loved for its protection. It measures 1 ¼ inches long (3 cm), a half inch high (1.5 cm) and 13 mm deep.
    • Above the dog is a Thai sterling silver perforated bead (9 mm), while a traditional, handmade Afghan silver on resin bead (14mm) sits underneath a wonderful antique, carved bone cylinder (1 inch or 2.5 cm. long x 11 mm deep).
    • Lastly, a vintage, carved lapis melon bead (15 mm) tops all the elements.
    • The burgundy handmade silk/polyester chain hosts my silver label.
    • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
    • The necklace measures 19 inches (48 cm) which includes a 5 inch pendant drop (12.5 cm).

Antique Silk Chinese Embroidery with Antique Chinese Gilt Button, Vintage Brass, Lapis Pendant on Russet Silk Band

    • This is an exquisite piece of antique Chinese silk, embroidered with gold “couched thread”, a complex and highly skilled technique. The embroidery dates from the late 19th century, the Ching Dynasty. It is attached to a peach silk border.
    • From the embroidery hangs a 19th century Chinese, gilt button, most probably worn on a hat or possibly a robe. It measures 1 inch across (2.5 cm).
    • A vintage Afghan, etched brass lozenge shaped pendant, 2 inches long (5 cm) x 1 ½ inches wide, (4 cm), and 6mm deep, hangs at the button of the necklace on tiny lapis beads. The pendant has an inset of natural lapis.
    • The pendants hang on a handmade russet silk/polyester band. The band’s clasp consists of a jade bead which fits into one of two stretchable silk rings, enabling the wearer to vary the length. My silver label is attached at the ring.
    • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
    • The necklace measures 18 Inches round (45.5 cm) with a 5 inch pendant drop (12.5 cm).

Antique Silk Chinese Embroidery with Bird, White Jadeite Goose, Natural Lapis, Vermeil on Midnight Blue Silk Band

    • This is a wonderful piece of antique Chinese silk embroidery, circa late 19th century, Ching Dynasty. It displays the skills of both satin stitch and gold thread couching. The bird, which is about to set off in flight, passes pink peach blossoms on a tree. It has been embroidered using the satin stitch and outlined using the complex couching stich in gold threads. More gold thread couching has been used as a decorative border.
    • From the embroidery hangs a vintage (now rare) handmade 18 CT gold on silver on hardened resin bead (17 mm)). This is a traditionally made bead from Afghanistan, using techniques learned from when Alexander the Great’s craftsmen came to Afghanistan in 330 BC.
    • Next, hangs a carved natural lapis melon bead (10 mm).
    • Lastly, continuing the fowl theme, is a delightfully carved white jadeite pendant of a goose with its neck turned back towards its body, as if too preen its feathers. It is 1 ½ inches long (4 cm), 1 inch high (2.5 cm) and 11 mm deep.
    • The pendants hang on a handmade, midnight blue silk/polyester band.
    • The necklace measures 18 Inches round (45.5 cm) with a 4 ½ inch pendant drop (11.5 cm).

Antique Nephrite Jade Dragon Disc on Double Strands of Natural Blue Sodalite and Sterling Silver

    • The substantial, somewhat calcified, antique, nephrite jade Bi disc has a deeply carved, lively dragon on its surface. It appears to whirl around as though it were dancing. There is also a lovely patina to the jade. On the flip side of the disc, there is a decoration almost like hearts, although I am certain that is not the design. The jade disc measures 2 inches (5 c m) in diameter and 11 mm deep.
    • The dragon, important in Chinese culture, symbolizes the Emperor and his power and playfulness. But it also stands for the universal source of energy, known as “Chi”. The Bi disc is an emblem of longevity and harmony.
    • The pendant hangs on 2 strands of 3 mm lapis beads, which hang on two strands of knobbly, natural blue sodalite beads. These beads, which are bone shaped and are 15 mm long, vary in pattern and colour, according to the colours of sodalite itself.
    • The strands feed into large rhodium silver beads (22 mm) from South Korea.
    • A handmade, sterling silver toggle clasp, has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
    • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
    • The necklace is 16 ½ inches long (42 cm) with a 2 inch pendant drop (5 cm).

Natural, Unpolished Lapis and Sterling Silver Necklace

    • This is a simple, very useful, handsome necklace of unpolished lapis oval, 1 ½ inches (4 cm), x 1 inch (2.5 cm), x 7 mm deep. The beauty of these unpolished ovals, and carved nuggets towards the back of the necklace (13 mm) is that the stunning pattern and graining of the lapis shows through in a way it would not, if the lapis was polished.
    • In between each lapis oval, handmade silver nest beads alternate. These beads (13 mm) are hand crafted in Thailand, with sterling silver wire to create nests of silver. Each is spaced with silver daisy discs.

Natural Blue Dumortierite Necklace, with Vermeil, Enamel Kyanite Bead, Coral and Glass

    • Between the dumortierite beads, green glass beads from India contrast with the blue stone and echo the green enamel in the special, vermeil, bullet shaped bead from Jaipur, India. This bead also sports a red enamel, which has been picked up by the coral melon breads
    • (12 mm) and 3mm coral beads flanking the vermeil disc beads (14 mm). The Indian vermeil/enamel bead is set with faceted blue kyanite stones, blending with the dumortierite colour. This bead is 1 ½ inches long (4 cm) and 19 mm in diameter.
